Montreal has a humid continental climate with a wide swing between winter cold and summer heat. The season you visit changes the experience of the city.
Winter: December to March
Expect sustained cold, snow, ice and occasional periods of severe wind chill. A warm insulated coat, proper boots, gloves and layers matter more than fashionable winter clothing.
Spring: April to May
Spring can be short, wet and variable. Snowmelt and slush give way quickly to patios, cycling and greener parks.
Summer: June to August
Summer is warm and can be surprisingly humid. It is also peak festival season, with long days and extensive outdoor programming.
Fall: September to November
Early fall is often comfortable and colourful, especially around Mount Royal. Temperatures drop quickly later in the season.
Best time to visit
For warm weather and festivals, summer is the obvious choice. September and early October can be excellent for milder weather, while winter is worthwhile for travellers who actively want snow and winter events.
