Montreal is one of the easier large North American cities to explore without a car. For most central-city visitors, metro plus walking is the useful default.
Do you need a car?
Usually not for a city-focused trip. Parking, one-way streets, construction and winter restrictions can make a car more burden than benefit.
Using the metro
The metro has four lines and connects many visitor areas. It generally operates from early morning until around 1 a.m., later on Saturday, but check the STM for current service.
Buses
Buses fill gaps where the metro does not reach your exact destination. Use a current trip planner rather than memorizing routes.
Walking
Walking is part of the visit. Group your day geographically so you are not repeatedly crossing the city.
Biking
Montreal has an extensive cycling network and a public bike-share system. The Lachine Canal is an especially approachable recreational route.
