Old Montreal is the city’s most obvious first-time sightseeing district, but it works best as a walkable historic neighbourhood rather than a collection of isolated attractions.
What should you see first?
Start around Place d’Armes and Notre-Dame Basilica, then move through the older streets toward Place Jacques-Cartier and the waterfront.
Old Montreal vs. Old Port
They overlap in a visitor’s mental map but are not the same thing. Old Montreal is the historic urban district; the Old Port is the waterfront recreation zone beside it.
How much time?
Allow 2–3 hours for a quick walk, half a day comfortably, and longer if you add museums and a proper meal.
Is it touristy?
Yes, but it also contains genuinely important architecture, history and public spaces. Balance it with neighbourhoods such as the Plateau or Mile End.
